ZAGG up your life

meh don't mind the title xD

When it comes to electronics, whether they're laptops, iPods, PSPs, MP3 players or even Phones, getting em scratched is the most of your worries especially when you just got them out of the box.  I've seen people bringing their cleaning cloth just to wipe their iPod Touch free from fingerprints. worry no more (I feel like as if I'm an ad guy here).

If you're someone like me (who's fussy about scratches on any devices and doesn't like bulky casings), then ZAGG's invisibleSHIELD™ (<--- click to go to their website) is what you need.

  • Scratch-proof patented film exclusive to ZAGG
  • Exceptionally clear and virtually indestructible
  • The ultra-thin film will not add bulk to your device
  • Precision cut to fit thousands of different devices
  • Military Grade originally developed to protect helicopter blades
  • Gives your device increased grip
  • Lifetime Replacement Warranty
  • Millions sold worldwide
*as taken from their website

yes it's practically scratch proof unless you take a sharp knife and poke through it, I actually ordered a couple of their products for a few of my devices (namely iPod Touch and PSP Go), I'd take a picture of em but it wouldn't make much of a difference because they're hard to see XD

and do keep in mind these products only protects your devices from getting scratched, dropping em from a tall building wont save em from getting into pieces (neither bulky casings I bet, unless they're really bulky)

PSP Go

Another step on attempting making the PSP any slimmer, Sony managed to design a PSP which is pocket friendly. The new re-designed PSP dubbed PSP Go or PSP-N1000 looks smaller, nicer, slicker than its predecessors (PSP-1000 -> PSP-3000).

Slide up the screen to reveal the hidden buttons underneath it, the slide-screen is well made and quite sturdy so you don't have to worry about the screen comes off flying when you slide it up. Apart from using the power button to power up the PSP Go, sliding up the screen will automatically powers it on, regardless whether you put it in sleep mode or completely switched it off.

When the PSP Go is switched on, you can slide the screen down to have this nice animation of a clock, yes a clock, and if you press both L and R trigger buttons it will switch to a calender where you can switch between months by pressing L or R trigger buttons. You can set it to sleep mode in the settings menu if you don't want a huge clock appearing when you slide down the screen.

The buttons on the PSP Go are slightly smaller than the previous versions of PSP, and just like PSP-3000, the home button is now called PS button (I'll get back to the PS button later) and the volume as well as brightness controls are moved to the top of the PSP Go, at first I was skeptical on how good it would be to have those buttons up there but they're actually quite accessible and doesn't interrupt much when you're playing provided that you know which button is which (may take a while to get used to it)

One thing that a lot of people are in doubt about is the analog nub placement when PSP Go was announced during E3, when I was discussing it with a couple of people about the stuffs announced at E3, one particular person (you know who you are xD, lessons learned don't judge a book by it's cover again alright xD) complained about it as if he knew that it would be uncomfortable. But actually, the analog nub is actually placed just right, it may feel weird at first for some people but after a while of playing you can barely feel any sort of discomfort. The reason behind this I'm guessing is because of the distance between the D-pad and the L trigger button, if the analog nub was to be placed below the D-pad just like the the previous PSP designs, it would be more uncomfortable.

Lets move on to another part of the review, I talked about the designs now I'm going to cover the inner functions of the PSP Go. With the portability of the PSP Go, there's no UMD drive so the only option to play games is to download them from PSN (PlayStation Network) to the internal 16GB memory (which can be extended by using M2 cards that can bring up to a total 32GB of memory), the games can be organized via PC program called Media Go, but I'm not going to cover that in this review (put it simply it's like iTunes for iPods).

While playing games, the player can actually press the PS button and pick whether they want to pause game or quit game, pause game is the new feature added exclusively for PSP Go, it's a feature where you can save the game at any point of the game and brings you back to the XMB to do other stuff to your PSP (like listening to music, watching videos, surf the net for example, I'll get back on the net thing if you guys are wondering why would you surf the net on the PSP). The save state feature only saves one game at a time (if you use the feature on another game, the previous one will be overwritten) and it will automatically deletes itself once you resume the game from it's saved state.

As I mentioned before about surfing the net on the PSP, as bad as it may be but the difference between PSP Go and PSP1000-3000 in terms of surfing the net is that you can connect to the internet via bluetooth, you can connect the PSP Go to your phone via bluetooth and your phone will act as a modem so that you can connect to the internet without having to desperately search for a Wi-fi in the area if lets say you're not at home.

You can also connect a PS3 controller to PSP Go and play your games using the PS3 controller, providing that you need a PS3 to connect both PSP Go and the controller together (one time only, afterwards you can just connect them instantly as long as you don't use the same controller to play games on your PS3 again, otherwise you need to do the procedure again). I haven't confirm this yet tho but if lets say you're playing a PSX game on the PSP Go, the PS3 controller can act as a 2nd player if you're playing a 2 player game (as you can set the PSP or the PS3 controller as player 1 or player 2 from the settings when playing PSX games, I don't think it'll work the same way for PSP games tho haha)

======
Verdict
======

Overall PSP Go is a nice gaming system to have but the question is, should you really get it if you want it? depends, if you have a large collection of UMD games, I wouldn't recommend you to because there are no way to convert UMD games into PSP Go yet. Not to mention you'll be depending solely on PSN to download games and if you're the type of person who's not familiar with it, or couldn't be bothered with it, then no don't get it.

Otherwise, there wouldn't be any problem if you want to get one.

If there are any questions regarding the PSP Go, you may ask by commenting on this post or leave a tag on the tag board, I'll do my best to answer your questions.

- For those who has yet to know, Devmeet which was suppose to be held on the 19th of July has been postponded to 20th December due to the rapid spread of H1N1.
- I'm craving for Sushi and KFC (irrelevant but I needed something to make this post slightly lengthy)
